What Is General Anesthesia?

General anesthesia is a controlled, medically induced state of unconsciousness. Unlike local anesthesia or IV sedation, which allow patients to remain awake or semi-conscious, general anesthesia ensures you will not see, hear, or feel anything during your procedure.

It is delivered by IV medications, inhaled gases, or a combination of both. Throughout your surgery, your surgeon and anesthesia team monitor you continuously to maintain complete safety. Our patients benefit from the presence of two airway trained providers in the room at all times – a board certified anesthesiologist and a board-certified oral and facial surgeon.

When Is General Anesthesia Recommended?

General anesthesia may be recommended for:

  • Complex surgical procedures (such as orthofacial surgery, TMJ surgery, or facial trauma repair)
  • Multiple complex treatments performed in one visit
  • Patients with specific medical or dental needs that make other forms of anesthesia less effective

Quad A-Certified

At NorthShore Center for Oral & Facial Surgery and Implantology, we perform general anesthesia at our Deerfield location. Our facility is proud to be QUAD A accredited, a mark of excellence recognized nationwide for outpatient surgical facilities. QUAD A accreditation means we meet the highest standards for anesthesia safety, sterilization, layout, staff training credentials, and anesthesia protocols—holding our practice to the same rigorous expectations as a hospital and surgery center setting. This certification reflects our unwavering commitment to patient safety and exceptional care.
