IV Sedation

Relaxed, Comfortable, and Stress-Free Care

For many patients, the thought of oral surgery can feel overwhelming. At NorthShore Center for Oral & Facial Surgery and Implantology, we make your comfort and peace of mind a top priority. That’s why we offer IV sedation, a safe and effective option that helps you stay calm and relaxed throughout your procedure.

What Is IV Sedation?

IV (intravenous) deep sedation is a form of sedation delivered through a small IV. It allows you to remain in a deeply relaxed state while still being responsive to your surgeon when necessary. During sedation you breathe on your own the entire time – there is no breathing machine or invasive airway. While you could technically respond to us, most patients are so comfortable that they just snore through their entire procedure! Other than anesthesiologists, our board certified oral and facial surgeons are the only medical providers qualified to sedate patients at this level. Many patients remember little to nothing about the procedure, making it an excellent option for wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, or longer surgeries. You’ll be carefully monitored at all times to ensure safety. A designated driver is required to take you home after the procedure.

Benefits of IV Sedation

Reduces anxiety – Keeps you calm and comfortable throughout surgery.
Minimizes discomfort – Enhances pain control and helps you tolerate longer procedures.
Efficient treatment – Allows multiple or complex procedures to be completed in one visit.
Patient preference – Ideal for those with dental fears, strong gag reflexes, or past negative dental experiences.

Who Can Benefit from IV Sedation?

IV sedation may be ideal if you:

  • Experience dental anxiety or fear of surgery
  • Are undergoing wisdom tooth removal, implant placement, or other complex procedures
  • Prefer a more comfortable, stress-free experience during treatment

Your Safety Comes First

Our board certified oral and facial surgeons are assisted by a highly trained surgical team when administering IV sedation. Throughout your procedure, our team continuously monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing to ensure maximum safety and comfort. After surgery, you’ll recover under supervision before returning home with a trusted escort.

What to Expect

Before your procedure – We’ll review your health history and answer any questions about sedation. You’ll need to avoid eating and drinking for several hours beforehand to ensure your stomach is empty for safety purposes. We will go over specific guidelines for eating and drinking with you at your consultation appointment including our Enhanced Recovery After Anesthesia (ERAS) protocol.

During your procedure – IV sedation is administered through a small line in your arm or hand. Within minutes you’ll feel calm and at ease, and most patients will fall asleep. While you could technically respond to us, most patients are so comfortable that they just snore through their entire procedure!

After surgery – You’ll recover in our office under close supervision before going home with a responsible adult. Most patients rest the remainder of the day and return to normal activities within 24 hours.
